U.S. Mormon Battalion Trail Hike
Date: 1/16/10
Time: 7:30AM - 12:00PM
Location: LDS Church, 44650 LaPaz Ave, Temecula
On January 25, 1847 tensions were high in the Temecula Valley. The Mexican-American War was on. Just days before, a band of San Luis Rey Indians who sided with the Americans had skirmished with Californio ranchers sympathetic with Mexico. there were many casualties on both sides. As the Indians gathered to bury thier dead, they saw a line of white men approaching from the east along Temecula Creek. They gathered thier weapons, and prepared for another battle. As the column drew nearer, they saw a few men on horseback. They wore U.S. Army uniforms, but were strangely unkempt. The others, about 360 in numbers, wore tattered rags. yet, every one wore a clean white leather belt across his chest and carried a musket. These white men were not Californios -- but who were they?
