WANT TO JOIN PACK 552?
Date: 5/3/08
At the beginning of each school year, we provide information about how to join Pack 552 to all boys entering grades 1 through 5 at Eugenia B. Thomas k-8 and John I. Smith Elementary Schools. However, boys can join any time during the year, not just in the fall.
What is a Pack?
A pack is a group of Cub Scouts, adult leaders and parents who belong to the same Cub Scout unit (e.g., Pack 552, Fireball District, South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America). A pack generally draws its membership primarily from an elementary school, church or community that is associated with the pack's Chartered Organization and Community. Each pack is made up of Tiger Cub (grade 1), Wolf (grade 2), Bear (grade 3) and Webelos (grades 4 & 5) dens.
What is a Chartered Organization?
A Chartered Organization is the sponsoring organization for a Cub Scout pack, usually a church, PTA, homeowners' association or other community group. The primary responsibilities of the Chartered Organization are to select the leadership of the pack and provide a meeting place. Each year, the pack must renew its Charter with its local council. The Chartered Organization must approve the rechartering application in order for the Charter to be renewed. Pack 552 is chartered by the OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CATHOLIC CHURCH at Doral, FL.
What is a Den?
A den is a small group of boys (ideally 6-8) of the same grade level. Each den meets on a weekly basis to work on achievements and the theme of the month activities. The den is led by volunteer adult Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders, who are responsible for planning and conducting each den meeting. The Den meetings happen in the first 3 Tuesdays of the month, from 7:30 PM to 8:30PM at the EUGENIA B. THOMAS K-8 SCHOOL cafeteria
When and Where are Pack Meetings Held?
Pack meetings are held monthly on the last Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the EUGENIA B. THOMAS K-8 SCHOOL cafeteria. The Pack Calendar provides exact dates, places and times of all pack meetings.
Who Runs the Pack?
Scouting is a FAMILY program. The pack is run entirely by unpaid volunteers (usually parents). An adult member of each Cub Scout household IS REQUIRED to participate in a leadership position or serve on the Pack Committee. - The Pack Committee, which currently consists of the Committee Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Training Leaders, Advancement Leaders, Outdoor Activities Leader, Public Relations, Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster, develops budgets, approves expenses, arranges for facilities and conducts overall planning.
- The Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders are most directly involved with the Cub Scouts. Dens meet weekly. A Den Leaders meeting should be held monthly (in conjunction with the Committee Meeting) to discuss issues of common concern (second Tuesday of every month).
What does it cost to join Pack 552?
The membership fee for new Cub Scouts is $10, payable when he registers. This covers his national registration and insurance for the balance of the calendar year. Parents (at least one per household) are required to register as well, and their registration has no charge.
Are there uniform requirements?
We require our Cub Scouts to wear the official Class A uniform in the Pack and Den meetings, or when completing non-dirty community services, such as walking in parades, flag raisings, Scouting for Food, and others. The official Class A uniform is the following: - Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, and Bear Cubs must wear the official uniform blue shirt, official blue pants or shorts, belt, cap, neckerchief and slide. - Webelos use the khaki official uniform shirt, official pants or shorts , belt, cap, Webelos neckerchief and slide. - Council Shoulder Patch and Pack 552 Numerals on the left sleeve - World Crest emblem (purple circle)over left pocket - Blue Shoulder Loops
Boys also have the option of wearing Pack 552 T-shirts (Class B uniform) during specific Den meetings and "dirty" community service, such as bay cleaning, painting or planting activities. The Pack has t-shirts for sale. We like parents to wear the Pack t-shirts during the pack events.
