Pack hike hosted by Den 8 Scorpions

Date: 3/21/09
Time: 10:00AM
Location: Waterfall Glen

GET READY TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS, SWING YOUR ARMS and MOVE YOUR BODY FOR SPRING!!!

WHO, WHAT, WHEN and WHERE:
Webelos Den 8, the Scorpions, are hosting a hike at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien on Saturday, March 21, 2009, starting at 10:00 a.m. Meet us at 10:00 a.m. in the Outdoor Education Camp Parking Lot at Bluff Road (a/k/a 99th Street) at Waterfall Glen in Darien. See below for directions to Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. We’ll then set out on the main trail and hike two miles west to the Scenic Overlook. After we take in the views of Lemont and the Des Plaines River, we’ll head back to the waterfall for some play time and rest. If you’d like to bring a lunch or a snack, then please do so. This will be a good place to have a snack or picnic. If anyone is still feeling adventurous after the waterfall, we can then hike north for another mile to the Big Cottonwood Swamp. (Click here for preserve and trail map: http://www.dupageforest.com/maps/waterfallglen.pdf).
When the hike is over, we’ll have easily covered four miles; If taking in the additional distance to the Big Cottonwood Swamp, we could log in six miles. So, “Eat your Wheaties!”

DRESS APPROPRIATELY and BRING A SNACK AND WATER:
Parents, let’s be sure our hikers are adequately prepared for the weather. Please dress in several warm layers, depending upon the weather. Consider putting your pack t-shirt on as one layer. It may be early spring, but as you know we can still have cold damp, windy weather. I suggest that scouts bring a back pack with a snack and water bottle and WEAR HIKING BOOTS (snow boots). You may want to bring some extra clothes in case you get wet at the waterfall after the hike. Remember to “Leave No Trace.” We bring out what we take in to Waterfall Glen.

CARPOOL IS SUGGESTED
I strongly suggest that parents of den members car pool to the forest preserve. The drive is about twenty minutes to the forest preserve, so please be aware so that we don’t have late arrivals. The hike is to begin at 10:00 a.m.

BE PREPARED, BE SAFE and HAVE FUN!
Finally, be prepared so the trip is fun, not cold, wet and miserable for your scout and you. Be prepared by reading the map information that I have provided. Be safe by knowing the weather report and heed what it says. Be safe by staying with the group. Have fun by doing all these things and springing into Spring and hiking to the springs with the Scorpions!

Feel free to call me with any questions. See ya’ll there.

DIRECTIONS TO WATERFALL GLEN (Distance 7.5 to 8 miles):
From 75th Street, travel east across I-355 and through Woodridge to Darien. Turn right (south) on Cass Avenue and follow it to the Forest Preserve to Bluff Road, which intersects Cass Avenue. Note: The first parking area, Northgate Parking Lot, is NOT our trailhead. Instead, continue on Cass Avenue to Bluff Road, also known as 99th Street, to the Outdoor Education Camp Parking Lot.
