Tiger Cub Hike (Copy of Email Sent 10/21/06)
Date: 10/28/06 - 10/28/06
Time: 10:00AM - 12:00AM
Location: Overland Park Arboretum
Dear Parents of Tiger Cubs,
I trust you all are doing well! We have had a great time together so far with the Wizards Soccer Game, learning from Major Mescheit about our Country, as well as making our scrapbooks, and making our Columbus Boats, as well as the Air Plane Derby! This month, next Saturday, we are going on our first hike together! Here are the details:
1. We will be hiking at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. located at 179th & Antioch in Overland Park. (Antioch is not a through street from the North...it is easiliest accessed by 69 Hwy.) Click here for more details: http://www.opprf.org/Arboretum.htm
2. Meet at the Visitor's Center at 10am
3. Bring a sacked lunch that the boy can carry in a backpack. It would be great if the boy has some type of back pack that he can carry his own "gear" in. For lunch, make something very simple that he can eat while out on the trail. Likewise, have the boys bring water, instead of a soft drink, etc. because we are doing to be talking about the importance of drinking water on a hike, etc. and how "sugar" drinks can actually take water out of your body.
4. Make sure they wear clothing that might fit the day. They should go ahead and wear their Class A uniform, but you might want them to wear a coat, and a cap to cover their ears, all of this depending on the weather.
5. Also make with them a small plastic poncho, made out of a trash bag (cutting out a hole for their head, and arms to stick through.) This is something that is good for the boys to always have on them in their back pack and to teach them more about thinking ahead and being prepared should we be out hiking and get stuck in the rain.
6. We will be hiking a little less than a mile, while taking several breaks with them to play, etc.
7. We should end our hike & picnic by noon.
This will complete their 5G requirement in their Tiger Cub Handbook p.76; and also elective 22, p.111...and this will be starting them on the path of earning their "Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award" (p.149 -- read up about it so that you can see what else he might need to do this year in order to earn this, and make it as creative, fun and educational for him as possible).
Likewise, I have the boy's beads and we will be giving those out at our next den meeting (11/9 @ EBC 7-8pm)...and for those who were not able to come to the last pack meeting I have your boy's badges, etc.
Remember at the den meetings to mark on the board what your boy has done so that I can get all their information logged in so they can get their awards, etc. Likewise, I will need someone to volunteer to head up the GO SEE IT for NOVEMBER (11/19...at the JOHNSON COUNTY MUSEUM because I will not be able to be there for this...IF YOU HAVEN'T SIGNED UP FOR A MONTH'S ACTIVITIES YET, PLEASE EMAIL ME ON THIS, SO THAT WE CAN SET THE CALENDAR IN ORDER FOR THE YEAR.
Thank you so very, very much!!!! That’s all the information I have at this time, so we will see you next week!
Together in the Scouting Adventure,
Matthew Hoffman Tiger Cub Den Leader
