Tiger Cub Den 3

Announcement from the Pack Trainer
Date: 5/1/06
Just a few notes from your new Pack Trainer. As most of you know, our former Pack Trainer, Lon Williams, who has served this pack faithfully for many years, was deployed to Afghanistan for the next year and a half, and I have agreed to take on the Trainer duties in his absence. The Pack Trainer is a relatively new committee position created by Scouting within the past few years and it is the only position that deals just with the adult leaders and not the scouts. It is my job to get you, the leaders, trained! Most of you have already taken you original three classes: Youth Protection, Cub Scout Essentials, and Cub Scout Leader Specific (just a reminder, Youth Protection needs to be redone every three years, and can be done online!) If you haven't completed these classes, I'll be getting in touch with you to get this taken care of. But these three classes are only the foundation of your training opportunities. The council provides classes periodically in other areas that you can take to expand your knowledge about Scouting and increase the number of tools you can use in teaching and leading your scouts. Two opportunities are approaching in the area of camp training that you should be aware of. First, on May 6, is BALOO, or Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. This is a one day training event that covers many areas of Cub Scout Camping. Sign in starts at 8:00am at Sedgwick County Park and is $5.00. This training is important because, to take Cubs out for camping, you should have at least one BALOO trained person, and, right now, we only have one or two BALOO trained persons, and they're all Webelos. So, if you can make it to this training event, I would encourage it. I've taken this class. It is sooooo much fun. The second opportunity is on May 20 and 21 up at Camp Kanza. Its OWL (Outdoor Webelos Leader) training! Don't you just love the acronyms! This overnight campout will go over what you need to know to take a den of Webelos Scouts out into the woods. Cost is $10 before May 5 and $15 May 5-15 and you must pre-register! I am planning on taking this one.
Below is a link to the Quivira site. Click on the Training tab and then the training calendar. There will list information on these two, as well as other, training events and allow you to pre-register online!. When you have completed any training, you should be given a card. Please make sure I get a copy of these cards for my records so I know who has what training.
Yours in Scouting Todd Gilber
