Webelos I Den 8 – Eagle Patrol
Camping at Antietam National Battlefield

Date: 7/17/09 - 7/19/09
Time: 5:00PM - 12:00PM
Location: Sharpsburg, MD

23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17th, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

We will be camping Friday and Saturday night on a portion of the Battlefield. We plan on hiking the battlefield on Saturday. We will hike part of the battlefield, break for a picnic lunch near the visitor center, then complete the hike.

Rohrbach Campground is part of the Antietam National Battlefield. It is a walk-in, primitive camping area available to Scouts and other organized groups, and is open each year from March 1- November 30. We will need to bring in our own drinking water, so we are asking each familty to provide 5 gallons for water so we can cook and clean. There are port-a-potties available for use near our campsites.

On Saturday, July 18th, the 6th New Hampshire Infantry will be recreating the life of a Civil War soldier – how he lived, marched and fought. We will be learning about the history of the regiment and the stories of common soldiers who fought with this unit. Weapons and tactics demonstrations will be held on Saturday.

There is no camping fee associated with this outing; only the cost of the food for the weekend. This usually amounts to about $7 per person (all meals Saturday and breakfast on Sunday).

We can accommodate 60 people on this trip – we have requested two campsites for the weekend. Remember for the new families – these outings are not just for you and your son; the entire family is welcome on our camping trips.
