Help get buckthorn out of Fort Snelling State Park!
Date: 7/25/09 - 7/25/09
Time: 9:00AM - 1:00PM
Location: Fort Snelling State Park (not Historic Fort Snelling)
What's buckthorn and why do we want it out of our local state park? It's an invasive, non-native plant that crowds out native plants that are supposed to be there. How do we do it? We take big weed wrenches and pull them out of the ground! It's hard work but it's fun.
After pulling buckthorn and learning a little about the flora and fauna of Fort Snelling State Park, we'll have a barbecue lunch. Afterwards, families can enjoy the many attractions of Fort Snelling State Park - fishing (bring your own gear), hiking, swimming (Scouts must be with an adult at the lifeguarded beach - this is not a Safe Swim Defense-approved swimming event), and visiting the interpretive center.
You can also hike up the bluff to Historic Fort Snelling (entry fee; free for Minnesota Historical Society members).
Fort Snelling State Park is accessible via the Post Road exit from Highway 5, just west of the main airport terminal exit. Stop at the entrance station for a volunteer pass unless you have an annual state park permit. You can also park at Historic Fort Snelling and hike down.
