Fun in the (hot) sun!
Camp Akela was a blast - although at times it felt like the blast was gasses directly from the sun (it was hot!). We arrived Friday evening, took our swim tests and had a camp tour, and enjoyed a campfire program put on by camp staff. The theme this year was "Mowgli's Pirate Adventure" so the weekend had a definite pirate them to it.
We camped in the White Hood campsite with Packs from Columbia Heights and Roseville (Phillippo's campsites are named for Jungle Book characters - White Hood is the cobra). White Hood is as far as you can get from the center of camp. But it's on the edge of the woods with a nice grassy field on a peninsula on Lake Byllesby. So it was worth the long hike several times per day. We camped in canvas frame tents on wooden platforms with cots and mattresses - luxury compared to Webelos Camp!
The Bears and Wolves had separate programming. But everyone experienced the archery and BB gun ranges, pony rides, a visit to the animal barns, boating, and swimming.
Bears learned the basics of hammers and saws and built a tool box (for those not there, this involved twelve boys hammering at the same time!), knife safety and earning the Whittling Chip, and learning about plants and trees and making leaf prints.
Wolves larned basic tools and safety, earned the Ultimate Frisbee belt loop and activity pin and about different kinds of fish, fishing regulations, how to fish, and how to make a fishing pole.
There was a campfire with campsite skits Saturday night and a campsite fire with s'mores and a pirate attack (by water!).
After lunch on Sunday, there was free time and then we hoisted our sails and headed home in the summer sun.
