Boy, did we ever bust the buckthorn!

Boy, did we bust buckthorn! First, we learned about buckthorn, what it is, why it's bad, and why we're busting it. Buckthorn is an invasive, non-native plant that doesn't belong in Minnesota (non-native) and takes over native plants (invasive).

Four groups cleared buckthorn along the north side of Lake Snelling, helping clear the area around wood duck houses - go wood ducks! There were Cub Scouts from Packs 38 and 120 and Boy Scouts from Troops 120, 132, and 196. Although there's lots of buckthorn left, if you hike along the north shore of Lake Snelling, you'll see that our work this morning sure made a difference!

Pack 38 hiked to Pike Island (there's a beaver lodge there; no word on beaver sightings) and a contingent from Pack 120 hit the beach. The water sure felt good after hot and sweaty buckthorn busting!

Thanks to Metro Lakes District Executive Mike Evano for his help (and for his buckthorn tongs for hot dog flipping), Daniel Amyx for coordinating with Fort Snelling State Park, and to Fort Snelling State Park.
