Like any organization, Scouting has a language all it’s own. This should help new parents and scouts with the basic terms.

If you hear anything that you don’t understand, just ask a leader or a parent who has been around awhile.

Cub Scouts – The scouting organization for boys in 1st – 5th grades. Led by adult volunteers.

Boy Scouts – The scouting organization for boys in 6th – 12th grades. Led by the boys.

Tiger Cub – A 1st grade Cub Scout. Can be recognized by their bright orange shirts. Wolf Cub – A 2nd grade Cub Scout. Bear Cub – A 3rd grade Cub Scout. Webelos 1 – A 4th grade Cub Scout. Webelos 2 – A 5th grade Cub Scout.

Webelos - Webelos is meant to provide a transition period from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Webelos continue to do all Pack activities, but also get involved with some Boy Scout Troop activities.

Rank – The primary award that the boys work on each year (Tiger Cubs work on their Tiger Badge and Bobcat Badge, Wolf Cubs work on their Wolf Badge, Bear Cubs work on their Bear badge, Webelos 1 Cubs work on their Webelos Badge, Webelos 2 Cubs work on the Arrow of Light – the highest award in Cub Scouting). We try to have each boy earn his rank for the year by February so he can receive it at the Blue & Gold banquet.

Den – A small group of 5-10 cub scouts who are all the same age. Den’s typically meet weekly and also go on field trips.

Pack – A group of Den’s that consist of all age groups. Pack 225 meets monthly, goes camping together, and has a variety of other Pack events.

Council – We are part of the Cape Fear Council, which consists of eight counties in southeastern NC: Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender, Bladen, Columbus, Robenson, Hoke and Scotland. The council provides camps and a professional staff to assist Pack and Den volunteers.

District – We are part of the Northeast district which consists of the Northeastern part of New Hanover County and the Southeastern part of Pender County. Our District Representative is Trey Glenham

Pack Meetings – Pack meetings consist of all the boys. Parents and siblings are encouraged to come along. We hand out awards earned that month, play games, have a great time. Pack Meetings are on Thursday nights towards the end of the month and start at 6:30 PM SHARP. Our goal is to be done no later than 7:30 PM since it is a school night. Our pack meets at WCA either in the typical Scout meeting room or the main cafeteria, depending on the event. Since we have over 40 boys and their families, these meetings are controlled chaos.

Jamboree – A large gathering of scouts. There are State, National and World-Wide Jamborees.

Scouting for Food – An event we take part in every year to collect food for local food banks. We distribute bags to every home in Salem with the help from other cub scout, boy scout and girl scout troops. A week later we collect the bags full of food.

Blue & Gold Banquet – A celebration of Cub Scouting’s birthday in March. We have a covered dish dinner, entertainment, and present the boys their ranks for the year. The banquet takes the place of the March Pack Meeting

Pinewood Derby – A Cub Scout classic where each boy builds a model race car from wood and we race them down a 32’ track. Winners go on to the District pinewood derby.
