The Knight Kamporee of Cub Scout Pack 3
or
Fun with a Purpose: Medieval Style
Learning about knights has been a part of Cub Scouts from the early days. Many a Cub made helmets from ice cream rounds or bleach bottles, then battled with cardboard shields and paper towel rolls. But, what happens when one of these cub scouts grows up and becomes a Cubmaster?
Pack 3, of Bellbrook, Ohio recently held a Knight Kamporee, at Cub World in Dan Beard Council, to go medieval with Cub Scout goal of “Fun with a Purpose”. They upgraded from cardboard weaponry/armor to the safer more durable foam. During the 3-day camping event, the cubs and their families, made foam shields, swords, battle-axes and helmets. Then they spent an afternoon with weapon training and tactics. Then climaxed with the Vikings storming a castle full of knights.
The Cubs started by comparing the similarities between medieval chivalry and the Cub Scout Promise (do my best, do my duty, help other people…). Along the way, they were taught teamwork with shields to repel boulders (beach balls being flung from the castle). They learned balance as they defended bridges (4”x 4” planks with staffs). They also had to understand how to deflect attacks with parries and blocks.
After the storming the castle, battling valiantly then declaring a draw (paid for by a ransom of ring pops for all), all 170 sat down for a finale feast. By the end of the day, it was unclear who was having more fun, the cubs or the leaders.
Pack 3 is the largest and oldest pack in Tecumseh council. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2008 and have been averaging 80 cubs a year. For more information, check out the pack 3 website at http://www.packsonline.com/oh/pack3/
