10/10, 10am -- Tyler Arboretum outing: Bring the family!

Date: 10/10/09 - 10/10/09
Time: 10:00AM - 2:30PM
Location: Tyler Arboretum

Our Scouts will enjoy a guided educational program and the whole family can enjoy the trails and grounds. **PLAN ON ARRIVING AT THE ARBORETUM AT 10AM ** (directions below). We will divide into two groups at that time. The pack will pay the admission fee for the scouts. As always parents and siblings are encouraged to attend as well – the cost will be $5 or less per person based on our group rate.

There are two sessions (10:30 and 12:30) with a naturalist and the scouts will earn their naturalist pins! RSVP to Keith Overton by 10/6.

**DIRECTIONS**
Take the Blue Route to the Route 1 - Springfield/Lima exit (Exit #5). Take Route 1 Southbound to Route 352. Turn right onto Route 352 North, which goes past the Granite Run Mall. Follow Route 352 North to the first intersection after the Mall and turn right onto Barren Road. Follow Barren Road past Penncrest High School (on the right). Turn left at the next intersection (small intersection with four-way stop signs) onto Painter Road. Follow Painter Road about one mile to the Arboretum entrance, located on the right.

See the attached links for maps and the arboretum website.

Additional program details:
Three Little Pigs Go Green: The traditional straw, stick, and brick abodes are brought into the 21st century with earth-friendly features like a rain barrel, a green roof, and sustainable building materials.

Imagination Station: This amazing structure resembles a giant tree that has fallen over. As visitors make their way through the hollow trunk they come to the "branches," which radiate out into multi-level platforms that are perfect for imaginative performances. Props and costumes invite storytelling and play acting.

Badger Burrow: Tucked beneath the boughs of towering rhododendrons, visitors will discover the magical home of Badger, a character from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. The diminutive furnishings invite children to use their imaginations as they "play house."

Bug Abode: Visitors can climb the ladder to a cantilevered platform high in a white oak to discover which insects live in trees and why they are so important to the environment.

Meadow Maze
The Meadow Maze is based on a classical seven-ringed labyrinth, adapted to a four-ring design by architect W. Gary Smith to fit the existing meadow landscape at Tyler. Examples of this design have been found in Asia, Europe, and the new world, some dating back to 2000 B.C.

Tyler's Maze is a meadow labyrinth that invites adventurers to solve the puzzle. Along the paths and around the maze perimeter there are Discovery Stations that educate and entertain as visitors twist and turn through the maze's paths. From the Raptor Roost, located at one end of the Maze, visitors can get an "eagle's eye" perspective of the meadow.
