Orienteering- What Is It?
Date: 4/21/06
Time: -:0-PM - -:0-PM
Location: French Creek State Park
Orienteering- What Is It? Orienteering is an organized outdoor sport that allows people of all ages to participate in a timed hiking activity. Think of it as a combination of scavenger hunt, race and hike all combined into one!
You’ll have a chance to find out and experience this great outdoor race for all ages. Cub Scout Pack 414 will be participating in the 18th Annual Mid-Atlantic Scout Orienteering Championships at French Creek State Park, PA. on Saturday, May 6, 2006. This event will be open to all scouts and family members in our region (Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts). Pre-event instruction will be offered prior to the event so that all scouts, regardless of prior experience will be able to take part in the actual competition. There will be courses of 4 distinct levels of difficulty so that every scout should encounter a challenge appropriately suited for his or her capabilities. Events will run through the morning with the instruction starting at 9am. Start times of each team will begin at 10am and go until about 11:30am. If you wish, you may stay and join Pack 414 for a hot dog lunch. An afternoon group event will run from 2-3pm, if you wish to make this a full day of outdoor fun. If you have never experienced Orienteering before, this will be a great chance to try it out!
We will be walking/running the course in groups of 2-5. The Cub Scouts will go with an adult advisor, who should follow his or her group, not lead it. Families may wish to participate as a team.
Early registrants will be eligible to receive a patch. The cost will be $5 per person. (Good Turn Shares may be used toward this Pack sponsored event.) Day of event registrations will be filled on a space available basis and will be $12 per person.
