Webelos I Den 2
Space Derby

Date: 11/19/09
Time: 5:30PM
Location: Shaftsbury Elementary

Pack 330 is pleased to be holding the 2nd Space Derby on November 19, 2009 at 5:30 PM at the Shaftsbury Elementary School. If your Scout was NOT at the October Pack Meeting, see your den leader to receive your Space Derby kit!

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we are asking each family to bring one of the following items to be donated to St John the Baptist Church food shelf for their Thanksgiving baskets:

Canned corn
Canned green beans
Canned pumpkin pie filling
Canned cranberry sauce
Canned Gravy
Stuffing
Turkeys (15-20 lbs.)

Ideally, I'd like to see if we can collect something (even if it is the $.35 canned vegetables from Aldi's) as the "price of admission" for each spectator and participant. However, we understand this may not be possible for all our families. We will just "Do Our Best" to help our neighbors!

We will take a Pack photo with the food donations, weigh the food, send the photo to the Bennington Banner and/or Pennysaver, and take the food to the church. This can be applied to "Good Turn for America" which tracks service projects done by Scouting units.

Below are the RULES for the Space Derby.

ROCKET RULES:

1. Only the basic parts in the BSA Space Derby kit may be used.
2. The body of the rocket (wooden block) may not be longer than 7”. The entire width may not be wider than 7” so there is no interference with other racers on the track .
3. There are NO other restrictions on weight or design. Use your imaginations! Rockets, planes, shooting stars, etc. are all acceptable!
4. Only 1, 2, or 3 rubber bands may be used to power your engine.
5. Graphite may be used on the propellor.
6. Glycerin or other rubber lubricant may be used on the rubber bands. Each kit comes with 4 rubber bands. Bring your spare bands in case of breakage. No other bands will be supplied. Non-BSA kit rubber bands may NOT be used.
7. Only rockets made this year may be raced.

HINTS:

1. Do NOT glue nose cap or plastic dowel in place.
2. Be sure propellor is facing the correct direction.
3. Be sure the hanger is facing the correct direction.
4. Bring your spare rubber band(s) in case of breakage. There will not be any others supplied on race day.

RACE RULES:

1. There will be 2 tracks, Track A and Track B. Each track will have 2 lanes, A1 & A2, B1 & B2.
2. Each rocket will race on ONE track for a total of TWO flights, one per lane.
3. To race, an adult volunteer will give each of the four racers 100 turns of the propellor. Distance travelled will be measured.
4. The winner will be the rocket which travels the furthest in two flights. In event of a tie, those tied will race off with 75 winds of the rubber bands.
