| START YOUR ENGINES! |
2009 Pinewood Derby
Date: 2/7/09 - 2/7/09
Time: 9:00AM - 1:00PM
Location: Donges Bay School
Gentlemen, start your engines!
...or at least grab some graphite!
The Pinewood Derby is fast approaching. Car kits were handed out at the 11/18/08 Pack Meeting. They will also be available for pick-up at the Winter Overnight. The Pack purchases Pinewood kits with the proceeds of the Popcorn Sale, so you need not go out and buy one, but IF YOU STILL NEED A CAR KIT, YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT ME DIRECTLY TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS.
Also, there will be a new format this year for the race itself. On FRIDAY night, February 6th, from 6pm until 9pm, we will check in ALL CARS. You will have an opportunity to unofficially race your car down the track many times, make adjustments to weight and clearance, and then you must say goodnight to your car, which will be held securely overnight at Donges Bay.
This hopefully allows boys and parents with completed and legal cars to register in a minute and return home without a long wait. It also allows an hour or two for illegal or overweight or unstable cars to be modified without holding up the race day. There need not be a panic to drill or glue or modify on the morning of the race! :) By 9pm on Friday, the number of participants will be known and the timing system will be tested. This will hopefully eliminate any "technical difficulties" on race morning.
Saturday will begin at 9:00am with design judging - by fellow participants - and then at 9:30am or so we'll begin racing. We should be done by 12:30 or so...
Some basic rules for starters: 1. car weight must not exceed 5.0 ounces on OUR scales. 2. overall length may not exceed 7 inches - the block length. 3. overall width may not exceed 2 and 3/4 inches. 4. there must exist 3/8 inch clearance beneath the car. 5. your wheels and axles must come from the kit provided. 6. your axles must enter the wood from your kit, which must be used as the base or frame of your car - build up from there. 7. no springs, bearings, washers, brushings allowed. 8. no liquid lubricant - no NyOil - just dry graphite allowed. 9. no design feature can use the starting mechanism for assist. 10. no commercial/professional finishing of wheels or axles. Pinewood cars should be prepared by boys, not fathers, but with lots of time together with fathers, brothers, grandpa's, and uncles. When in doubt regarding a rule or process, please bring photos of your Scout making his car.
We will have patches for all, and trophies for Fastest Car and runner-up - by rank/grade Coolest Car and runner-up - by rank/grade Fastest Car - by Pack - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Coolest Car - by Pack - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
Any other cool award ideas?
Thanks, and see you at the track!
